Code lists

Code lists are the controlled vocabularies for dimensions and, when relevant, attributes, facilitating comparability and discovery of the data.

All code lists are named with the prefix “cl_” followed by a human readable code. For example, cl_pop_type is the code list of population types. The names follow as much as relevant those used by SDMX available in the SDMX global code list registry. Code lists have a standard structure that includes a human readable code, short label, long label, description and validity period, at minimum. Some code lists include additional attributes.

Several code lists use a common set of standard codes to support consistent handling of totals, unknown values and non-applicable values across the statistical data model. These codes are aligned with the SDMX standard wherever possible. The codes _T, _X, and _Z are standard SDMX representations, while _O (Other) is a UNHCR extension used when a value cannot be mapped to an existing code list.

codelabeldescription
_TTotalTotal or no further disaggregation within the dimension.
_OOtherOther value not covered in the existing code list.
_XUnspecifiedUnspecified, unknown or not available.
_ZNot applicableNot applicable; distinct from unknown or unspecified.

These codes are used consistently across dimensions, attributes and metadata where relevant. Their use ensures that aggregated, missing and exceptional cases are handled in a standardized manner across datasets, data series and metadata tables.

Access to the full set of code lists will be available as part of the data dictionary in the next release.
